Neuromuscular Dentistry
This is an approach to dental treatment that focuses on the correction of jaw misalignment. Neuromuscular dentists determine the optimal position of the jaw in order to correct misalignment and adjust how the upper and lower teeth come together (occlusion). The goal is to realign the jaw joint to a position that would help alleviate painful symptoms and discomfort from temporomandibular joint disorders. What sets neuromuscular dentistry apart from other dental theories or procedures is that it places emphasis on analyzing the gravitational pull in affecting the bite, as well as knowing the resting positions of jaw muscles.
Digital Technology and Diagnosis
Digital X-rays and digital radiographs are used to reveal the position and condition of the jaw joint. The dentist will then determine the ideal position of your jaw to relieve TMJ symptoms.
Treatment
If your jaw reveals any misalignments through x-rays or examinations, neuromuscular dentistry may help to identify the root cause of the problem. Treatment will focus on correcting bite abnormalities by allowing the jaw to go to their optimal positions. Adjustments to bite can be achieved using a splint or mouth guard until the correct bite has been stabilized. Other more serious deformities may require surgery to properly align or restore optimal oral positions.
