Restorative Dentistry & Fillings
A filling is commonly used to treat a tooth that has been affected by decay, cracks, or breakage. The affected portions are especially susceptible to bacterial infections and gum inflammation. Therefore, it is important to address the problem early to prevent complications further down the road. At Port McNeill Dental, we offer high quality fillings to provide structure and strength to the affected tooth. The fillings also replenish any gaps or cracks to prevent bacterial entry into the root of the tooth.
Traditionally, a silver amalgam filling is applied to fill cavities within the affected tooth. The downside to this material is that it is aesthetically displeasing to look at. Fortunately, at Port McNeill Dental, you have a choice of using composite fillings, which can be made to match the colour of your teeth.
Composite Fillings
A composite filling is composed of an advanced mixture of plastic and glass to help restore and repair blemished teeth. It is becoming a more popular alternative over silver amalgam fillings because this mixture costs less and the procedure can typically be completed in one appointment. Composite fillings help to support tooth structure and prevent further breakage from chewing or abrasion from food. They also insulate damaged teeth from any discomfort caused by hot or cold substances ingested into the oral cavity.
How is the procedure done?
First, the treatment area is desensitized with local anesthesia. Next, the dentist removes the decay completely and cleans the remaining cavity thoroughly. After the cavity is cleaned, the dentist applies the composite fillings into the space in layers. Each layer is allowed to harden and strengthen through the use of a special light before the next layer is laid down. Lastly, the filling is shaped and polished to match the colour of your teeth.
After the procedure, you may feel sensitivity and some discomfort in the area. This is normal and symptoms will subside within one or two weeks.
These fillings are not made to last forever, so regular checkups are important and will help your dentist determine if you need a replacement.
